Airbnb.org, the company's nonprofit, held its first gala in Los Angeles on October 28, unveiling a five-year initiative to expand temporary housing for people facing difficult circumstances.
Under the plan, Airbnb will contribute 10 cents from each booked stay to the nonprofit. The organization aims to raise $500 million over five years and provide one million nights of free housing annually.
Airbnb.org, launched in 2020, has provided temporary accommodation to families affected by crises and disasters. The new initiative is also intended to support people experiencing domestic violence, veterans in need and those traveling for medical care.
Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the evening featured a performance by Charli XCX and food curated by José Andrés. Serena Williams, Demi Lovato, Charlize Theron and Cynthia Erivo were among the guests. The organization said donations were possible, but fundraising was not the event's central focus.
By linking each booking to a contribution, the initiative could make emergency accommodation support a more consistent part of the company's operations.
