AI Platform Maps New Genetic Paths Toward Dodo-Inspired Birds

Colossal Biosciences' GenoMorph AI platform analyzes bird genetics and development to identify potential dodo-related DNA targets, supporting more focused de-extinction research.

AI Platform Maps New Genetic Paths Toward Dodo-Inspired Birds

Colossal Biosciences has introduced GenoMorph, an AI platform designed to help researchers identify genetic changes that may have shaped traits in extinct birds. The company is applying it to its effort to recreate selected characteristics of the dodo, whose limited genetic data makes comparisons challenging.

While the company has obtained about 100 woolly mammoth genomes, it has only one dodo genome to work with. GenoMorph addresses this gap by combining developmental data from modern birds with genetic information and 3D skull measurements from more than 70 bird species. The system searches for DNA regions that may influence features such as beak and facial structure.

Colossal says the platform has identified around 2,300 potential DNA-editing targets related to dodo cranial and facial traits. GenoMorph does not edit genes; it helps researchers select changes for further testing. The company is also developing a method to deliver gene-editing tools into bird embryos, which could allow researchers to study developmental effects sooner.

Colossal also reports that its Nicobar pigeon colony has grown to 36 birds and that it has produced cells that can develop into eggs and sperm. The Nicobar pigeon is the dodo's closest living relative, making these cells relevant to the company's research strategy.

By combining AI analysis, comparative biology and laboratory testing, tools like GenoMorph could make research on scarce ancient DNA more targeted, while helping scientists evaluate potential genetic changes before taking further steps.
