Art advocate Hall W. Rockefeller has introduced an AI-powered tool designed to bring greater transparency to gender representation across gallery artist rosters. Developed in support of her organization Less Than Half, the platform assesses how galleries represent women, men and non-binary artists.
The system reviews publicly available roster information and calculates the share of artists across these categories. It is also designed to recognize artist duos, collectives and non-binary identities, offering galleries a clearer view of representation within their programs.
A visibility benchmark for galleries
Galleries that meet the initiative's diversity threshold can display a Less Than Half Approved digital designation. The aim is to help collectors, institutions and audiences identify organizations actively investing in women artists' careers, long-term development and cultural visibility.
The initiative arrives as the art market considers the growing influence of women collectors. Research from Art Basel and UBS has indicated that high-net-worth women tend to include a larger proportion of women artists in their collections and showed strong spending in art and antiques.
By translating representation data into an accessible benchmark, the platform could encourage more intentional collecting and gallery programming. As cultural institutions increasingly use data to guide decisions, tools like this may help build a more inclusive and balanced art ecosystem.
