Agility Robotics is opening a 60,000-square-foot training facility in Fremont, California, placing its humanoid robot strategy close to Tesla's planned Optimus production site. The move highlights how quickly the Bay Area is becoming a center for next-generation robotics.
The company's robot, Digit, is already working in warehouse and manufacturing environments, moving totes and bins for customers including Amazon, GXO, Schaeffler and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada. Agility says it has secured $300 million in contract orders, underscoring growing commercial demand for practical humanoid systems.
CEO Peggy Johnson says the new site will help the company scale deployments by training robots in settings that mirror real-world operations. More than 30 customers are currently discussing Digit installations, and the facility is expected to speed up testing, safety validation and workflow integration.
Agility is taking a focused approach to autonomy, emphasizing that safety-critical systems should remain separate from generative AI. The company sees artificial intelligence as a tool for expanding the number of tasks robots can learn, not as a replacement for essential control layers.
Unlike several newer humanoid startups, Agility is concentrating on industrial use rather than home robots. Its upcoming Version 5, planned for later this year, is expected to detect humans and operate with greater flexibility in shared environments. With this expansion, Agility is positioning itself to shape the next phase of robotics in logistics and manufacturing, where smarter machines may become a standard part of everyday operations.
