A meteorite recovered in northwest Africa is offering scientists a rare glimpse into the Moon's ancient past. Known as Northwest Africa 12593, the rock appears to preserve evidence of a massive lunar impact that occurred about 3.5 billion years ago, when Earth was still in the early stages of life's emergence.

Researchers say the sample carries traces of three separate impacts. The oldest one was powerful enough to melt lunar material into a rock-like sheet, leaving behind mineral clues that point to extreme heat. One of the strongest indicators is a zirconium-based mineral fingerprint formed only under intense impact conditions.

The findings, published in Geology, help build a clearer timeline of how frequently major collisions shaped the inner solar system. The study also suggests that this lunar event may line up with impact records from Earth and Vesta, a large body in the asteroid belt, hinting at a wider pattern of activity across neighboring worlds.

Because Earth constantly renews its surface, ancient rocks from that era are difficult to preserve. The Moon, however, keeps its scars far longer, making lunar meteorites valuable natural archives. In this case, the rock was later broken up by another impact and eventually ejected into space before landing on Earth as a meteorite.

Scientists see this as more than a lunar discovery. It is a time marker from a period when the solar system was still evolving rapidly and early life on Earth was beginning to take shape. Each new sample like this sharpens our view of planetary history and the forces that shaped it. In the future, such meteorites may help connect the story of the Moon, Earth, and the broader solar system with far greater precision.
