A Critical Eye on the Art World: A Conversation with Damien Davis

Damien Davis, a Newark-based artist and educator originally from Crowley, Louisiana, and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, focuses on cultural representation and identity through a unique visual language. His work recontextualizes symbols from various cultures, challenging historical narratives and encouraging fresh interpretations.
His art has been showcased at prestigious venues, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Davis has received accolades such as the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Community Engagement Grant and has participated in various artist residencies.
Holding a BFA in Studio Art and an MA in Visual Arts Administration from New York University, Davis's work has been featured in notable publications, including The New York Times and Frieze.
Hakim Bishara, the Editor-in-Chief at Hyperallergic, is a distinguished figure in art writing, recognized with the 2019 Andy Warhol Foundation and Creative Capital Arts Writers Grant.
