A new gadget from Autonomous is rethinking screen-time control by making app access a physical action instead of a quick tap. The Autonomous Key is an NFC device that works with a companion app to lock selected apps, then requires a phone scan to reopen them.
Once unlocked, access can last for up to 60 minutes before the apps automatically lock again. The idea is simple: place the key in another room, at work, or anywhere less convenient, and the extra step can help turn impulsive scrolling into a more intentional choice.
Priced at $9, the device is positioned as a more affordable alternative to products such as Blok, Unpluq, and Brick. It supports Android 8.0 and later, as well as iPhones running iOS 15 or later, and the compact key measures about three inches long.
The companion app adds AI-powered insights, showing how often apps are unlocked, how long they stay open, and when usage spikes during the day. It also uses a playful tone to comment on habits and suggest keeping the key farther away if unlocks happen too quickly.
Unlike some app-blocking tools, the system does not require a subscription or premium upgrade. One key can also be paired with multiple phones, which may make it useful for households or people managing several devices.
Autonomous Key is currently in beta after a Kickstarter campaign and has started shipping in five colors: pink, orange, blue, gray, and brown. As digital wellness tools evolve, physical-first designs like this could shape a more mindful relationship with smartphones in the future.
