Archaeologists in southern Italy have uncovered a remarkably preserved 2,500-year-old necropolis during preventive excavations linked to an industrial expansion near Gragnano, close to Naples. The discovery was announced by the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the Metropolitan Area of Naples, which oversaw the work.
The burial ground was found beneath the historic Garofalo pasta factory and dates to the Archaic period, between the 8th and 6th centuries BCE. With 85 graves identified so far, the site appears to have served, at least in part, as a resting place for a wealthy elite of the 6th century BCE.
Excavators recovered decorated pottery, jewelry, weapons, and imported objects including Egyptian scarabs from Naukratis, along with silver and bronze pieces of Etruscan origin. Some burials were sealed in cists made of volcanic tuff, helping preserve organic materials such as fabrics, wooden items, and woven baskets.
The find offers a vivid window into the exchange routes that connected Campania with Greece, Egypt, Etruria, and the eastern Mediterranean. It also adds new detail to burial practices and daily life in pre-Roman Campania.
According to Luigi La Rocca of Italy's Ministry of Culture, the excavation stands out for both the quality of the artifacts and the exceptional state of preservation. The area has now been documented and will be covered again, while multidisciplinary research on the recovered material continues, including analysis of human remains that may reveal more about diet and living conditions. This discovery could reshape future understanding of ancient Mediterranean networks and local history.
