1Password Lets AI Agents Sign In Without Seeing Passwords

1Password for Agents lets users authorize AI assistants to access online accounts without revealing passwords, using identity checks and personal approval to keep credentials under their control.

1Password Lets AI Agents Sign In Without Seeing Passwords

Password manager 1Password has introduced 1Password for Agents, a service that lets users authorize AI assistants to sign in to personal accounts without handing over their passwords.

When an agent requests access, it sends a unique digital key to 1Password to verify its identity. The user receives an alert and can approve the attempt. If authorized, 1Password enters the credentials for the agent, which can then carry out the requested task without seeing or retaining the password.

The service works with a range of AI assistants, including offerings from Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI and Meta, as well as agents from startup Town. 1Password says it plans to add support for more companies.

By separating an agent's ability to complete a task from access to the credentials behind it, the system gives users a way to delegate while keeping passwords under their control. Tools like this could help shape a future where AI assistants handle more online tasks with clearer, user-approved boundaries.
