Zoox, the innovative autonomous vehicle company, is set to introduce its purpose-built robotaxis in Austin, Texas, and Miami, Florida, following nearly two years of testing in these vibrant cities. The company announced on Tuesday that it will commence its early-rider program later this year, allowing residents to experience this cutting-edge transportation option.

In addition to the new locations, Zoox is also expanding its existing services in San Francisco and Las Vegas. The service area in San Francisco will see a significant increase, focusing on the eastern half of the city for early riders.

Las Vegas will witness a doubling of destinations accessible via the Zoox app, now including popular venues such as The Sphere, T-Mobile Arena, and the Las Vegas Convention Center. Currently, riders can enjoy free rides to various hotspots like Area15, Top Golf, and Fashion Show Las Vegas. Moreover, Zoox plans to initiate testing of its robotaxi service at the Las Vegas airport, paving the way for future operations.

At present, Zoox is only able to offer complimentary rides due to federal regulations, which the company is actively working to amend. Progress is being made, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently opened public comments on Zoox's application for exemptions from specific Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards necessary for launching paid services.

Zoox remains optimistic about receiving these exemptions and has partnered with Uber to integrate its robotaxis into the ride-hailing giant's network in Las Vegas later this year.

Since its inception, Zoox has achieved remarkable milestones, driving nearly two million autonomous miles and transporting over 350,000 riders. The company has been gathering valuable feedback from riders, resulting in exciting new features such as Bluetooth audio connectivity, branded as "ZooxCast," and a "Find My Zoox" function to assist riders in locating their vehicle in bustling areas.

While Zoox may not be expanding as rapidly as its competitor Waymo, which is set to launch services in 20 new cities globally this year, it is making significant strides. Recently, Zoox began mapping the streets of Dallas and Phoenix in preparation for future testing, alongside ongoing operations in Washington, D.C., Seattle, Los Angeles, and Atlanta.
