Amazon-owned Zoox is moving into a new phase in Las Vegas, where its robotaxi service will begin charging passengers starting August 10. The step marks the company's transition from public testing to commercial operations.
Founded in 2014, Zoox set out to build both a custom electric vehicle and the autonomous system that powers it, alongside a ride-hailing platform designed for on-demand travel. After Amazon acquired the startup in 2020, Zoox revealed its distinctive cube-shaped robotaxi later that year, featuring advanced sensors, a moonroof, and no steering wheel or pedals.
The company has spent years refining the vehicle, expanding testing, and working through regulatory requirements. A recent temporary exemption from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now allows Zoox to charge for rides, opening the door to paid service in a vehicle designed without traditional controls.
Zoox says fares will be based on a base price plus distance and time, with the final amount shown before booking. The company also plans to factor in destination-related pricing for trips such as airport rides or major events. Its goal is to stay competitive with premium ride-hailing options while advancing autonomous mobility.
For now, Zoox is also offering robotaxi rides in San Francisco and Austin, while continuing to pursue the remaining approvals needed for broader commercial use in California. This launch suggests a future where autonomous transport becomes a more familiar part of everyday urban travel.
