YouTube Music Adds Labels to Clarify AI's Role in Songs

YouTube Music is adding labels that explain whether songs were fully or partly created with AI, giving listeners more transparency while keeping AI-assisted tracks eligible for monetization.

YouTube Music Adds Labels to Clarify AI's Role in Songs

YouTube Music is introducing labels that show when generative artificial intelligence has contributed to a track's creation. The labels will appear on song player pages, and listeners can select one to learn more about AI's role in the music.

The system will also be available in the main YouTube app. YouTube says it worked with music partners and uses its own detection tools to identify AI involvement. Partners can mark tracks as "Fully Gen AI," "Partly Gen AI" or "No Gen AI."

"Fully Gen AI" describes music created entirely with AI. "Partly Gen AI" applies when a track includes AI-generated elements alongside artists' contributions, such as live performance. The "No Gen AI" designation includes standard audio processing, such as pitch correction.

The labels are intended to provide information rather than restrict distribution. AI involvement alone will not prevent a track from being monetized, reflecting YouTube's focus on disclosure as generative tools become part of music creation.

Clearer labeling could help listeners make more informed choices while giving artists and platforms a shared way to describe how music is made. Over time, transparent standards may shape how audiences discover and understand the next generation of recorded music.
