YouTube has announced exciting upgrades to its $7.99 per month Premium Lite subscription, now allowing users to download videos for offline viewing and enjoy background play, even when the screen is off or while using other applications. Previously, these features were exclusive to the more expensive $13.99 per month full plan.

This enhancement is a direct response to user feedback gathered during a pilot program, where subscribers expressed their desire for these functionalities to enhance their viewing experience.

Launched in March 2025, YouTube Premium Lite was designed to offer a budget-friendly option, removing ads from most videos across various genres including gaming, fashion, beauty, and cooking. However, music-related content continues to display ads, and Lite subscribers do not have access to the ad-free YouTube Music app.

With the introduction of offline downloads and background play, the main incentive to upgrade to the full Premium subscription now centers around ad-free music content. This shift is likely to attract users who were initially hesitant to pay solely for ad-free viewing but are interested in these additional features.

The Lite subscription tier made its debut in Thailand, Germany, and Australia before arriving in the U.S. last year. It has since expanded to several global markets, including Canada, Brazil, the U.K., India, Mexico, and various European and Asian countries.

YouTube's subscription service has shown consistent growth, contributing to a remarkable $60 billion in total revenue in 2025, as reported by its parent company, Alphabet. This figure includes revenue from advertisements, which saw a 9% increase to $11.38 billion in the fourth quarter alone. Additionally, the revenue from the "subscriptions, platforms, and devices" category surged by 17% to $13.6 billion, driven primarily by the growth of YouTube Music and YouTube Premium subscriptions.

As of March 2025, Alphabet reported over 125 million users for YouTube Music and YouTube Premium globally. While the latest Q4 earnings report did not provide updated figures, the company indicated it has surpassed 325 million paid subscriptions across its consumer services, including YouTube Premium and Google One.
