WireGuard, a prominent open-source VPN software that serves as the backbone for various security applications, is currently unable to deliver crucial software updates to its Windows users due to a lockout from its Microsoft developer account. Jason Donenfeld, the creator of WireGuard, expressed his frustration, stating that this unexpected account suspension has halted essential updates, including driver signing necessary for the software's functionality.
In a recent communication with TechCrunch, Donenfeld revealed that he encountered an "access restricted" error while trying to log into his Microsoft developer account, despite having completed the necessary verification procedures. This incident marks the second time a well-known open-source project has faced account-related issues with Microsoft, following a similar situation with VeraCrypt, another widely-used encryption software.
Both Donenfeld and VeraCrypt's developer, Mounir Idrassi, reported that they were not informed prior to the account terminations, which has led to significant disruptions for their user bases. Idrassi highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that being locked out could prevent users from accessing their encrypted files if updates are not implemented in time.
WireGuard is celebrated for its simplicity and robust security features, making it a popular choice among users worldwide. It serves as the foundation for numerous commercial VPN services, enhancing online privacy and security. Donenfeld had been preparing to modernize the Windows code for WireGuard and was ready to submit updates to Microsoft when he encountered the access issue.
Despite verifying his identity with Microsoft, including submitting government-issued identification, Donenfeld's account remained suspended. He discovered that Microsoft had recently concluded a mandatory account verification process for developers in the Windows Hardware Program, which required all partners to complete verification to maintain their accounts.
As a result of this verification requirement, developers like Donenfeld and Idrassi are restricted from publishing updates that could contain sensitive code. Donenfeld lamented the lack of communication from Microsoft, stating, "Microsoft never sent me any notification at all about this."
In a hopeful turn of events, Donenfeld mentioned that he has recently made contact with Microsoft's support team, and he is optimistic that the situation will be resolved soon. Meanwhile, Windscribe, another VPN provider, has reported similar account lockout issues, indicating that this challenge is affecting multiple developers in the industry.
