WhatsApp has begun introducing username reservations ahead of a wider launch expected later this year, shifting the app's identity model beyond phone numbers. The change is designed to make it easier for people to find and message each other while adding a stronger layer of privacy.
But the new system is also drawing attention for a different reason: the possibility of impersonation. Early testing showed that handles resembling well-known public figures, companies, and institutions could still be reserved, prompting questions about how the platform will distinguish legitimate identities from lookalikes.
Meta says it will reserve usernames linked to public figures, government bodies, and selected variations of those names to help protect authentic accounts. Even so, the company has not fully explained how it decides which names are blocked in advance and which remain available.
The discussion is especially active in India, WhatsApp's largest market, where officials have raised concerns that usernames could make it easier for bad actors to contact users without revealing phone numbers. Regulators want clarity on how the feature will be managed before a full rollout.
Security specialists note that usernames can reduce exposure to phone-based risks, but they also stress the need for careful identity checks. WhatsApp has said most users should choose a unique handle, while creators, businesses, and organizations may link Instagram or Facebook names for consistency across Meta's ecosystem.
As the rollout continues gradually, the feature is becoming a test case for how major platforms balance privacy, convenience, and trust in digital identity. In the future, username-based messaging could reshape how people connect online while pushing platforms to build smarter verification tools.
