WhatsApp Web App Receives Major Upgrade for Calls

WhatsApp's web app is set to revolutionize user experience with the introduction of audio and video calling features, enhancing connectivity for millions globally.

WhatsApp Web App Receives Major Upgrade for Calls

WhatsApp continues to dominate the messaging landscape, boasting over three billion active users who connect daily through messages and calls. Although the app has long provided mobile and desktop calling capabilities, its web version has not supported audio or video calls--until now.

Make Calls Directly from WhatsApp Web

As reported by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is gradually introducing audio and video calling features to its web application. Initially, this functionality will be available for individual chats to those who opt into the beta version, with plans to extend it to all users in the coming weeks.

According to WABetaInfo, the calling experience on the web app mirrors that of the desktop application. When you access an individual chat, a video call icon will appear at the top. By clicking on it, you can choose to initiate either a voice or video call. These calls maintain the same end-to-end encryption as seen in WhatsApp's mobile and desktop apps, ensuring that only participants can hear the conversation. Additionally, the web app supports Screen Sharing during video calls, allowing users to share their screen in real-time.

WhatsApp is also developing group call functionality for web users. Although this feature will not be available at the same time as individual calls, it will eventually allow group chats with up to 32 participants.

While this update may not seem groundbreaking for regular mobile or desktop users, it represents a significant advancement for certain groups. For instance, Linux users, who currently rely on the web app due to the absence of a dedicated desktop version, will finally be able to make calls directly from their computers without needing a mobile device.

Joining the WhatsApp Web App Beta

This new feature will soon be accessible to all web app users, but for now, you must be part of the beta to experience it.

Joining is straightforward. Simply open the web app, navigate to the settings menu, select "Help," and then choose "Join beta." This action will transition you to the beta version, where you should see a "Beta" label on your screen. Once in the beta, you will have access to the calling options in individual chats.
