WhatsApp Opens Username Reservations to Let Users Share Profiles Without Phone Numbers

WhatsApp is rolling out username reservations, letting users share profiles without exposing phone numbers while keeping account setup tied to a mobile number.

WhatsApp is preparing a major step in how people connect on the app: usernames. The Meta-owned platform has announced that users will soon be able to share their profiles without revealing their phone numbers, while account creation will still require a number.

With the new system, users can begin reserving usernames ahead of the full rollout later this year. Eligible names will be between 3 and 40 characters, and WhatsApp says it is setting aside some usernames for celebrities, VIPs, and organizations. Businesses and creators will also be able to keep their identity consistent by using the same username across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

Once the feature reaches a user's country, a notification will appear in the app. From there, the username can be selected through Settings, under Account and Username. WhatsApp is also introducing a username key, an added layer that others may need in order to message someone.

The company says the reservation process is designed to prevent duplication across its massive user base of more than 3 billion people. Usernames will not be searchable, and only those who know the exact name will be able to reach a user. The feature can be turned off or changed at any time.

According to Alice Newton-Rex, Vice President and Head of Product at WhatsApp, the goal is to give people more control over when they share personal contact details. For now, usernames will need to be shared manually, either by text or spoken communication.

As messaging platforms continue to evolve, WhatsApp's username system could reshape digital identity and make everyday communication feel more flexible, private, and future-ready.
