WhatsApp lets users reserve usernames ahead of launch

WhatsApp is rolling out username reservations, letting users claim handles before launch and prepare for a more private way to share contact details.

WhatsApp is preparing a major identity upgrade for its 3 billion users: username reservations are now rolling out, even though the feature itself is not yet live. The move is designed to help people secure a preferred handle before the full launch arrives later this year.

Once usernames activate, users will be able to share a WhatsApp contact without exposing a phone number. That shift could make everyday messaging more flexible for individuals, while giving businesses a cleaner way to connect with customers.

How the reservation process works

To claim a username, users can open Settings, go to Account, and select the Username option under "Your Account." First-time users will see a "Create username" prompt, where they can enter their preferred name. If that name is already taken, WhatsApp can suggest alternatives.

The platform is also protecting certain usernames linked to public figures and organizations, which means some handles will not be available for reservation. Users with existing Facebook or Instagram usernames may also be able to reserve the same handle through those connected accounts.

After a username is set, it can later be edited or removed from the same menu. WhatsApp is also adding a username key, a privacy layer that lets people limit first-time contact to those who know a four-digit code. The key can be saved or changed whenever needed.

For now, the reservation system is focused on preventing duplicate claims before the full feature goes live in the coming weeks. It marks a step toward a more private, more portable messaging identity across Meta's ecosystem. In the future, this could reshape how people and brands connect in digital communication.
