WhatsApp Introduces Prepaid Phone Recharges in India to Enhance Payment Features

WhatsApp enhances its app in India by introducing prepaid phone recharges, aiming to boost its digital payment services and user engagement.

WhatsApp is set to enhance its user experience in India by adding the ability to recharge prepaid mobile phones directly within the app. This initiative aims to encourage more transactions as the platform seeks to strengthen its presence in the competitive digital payments landscape.

In collaboration with fintech company PayU, WhatsApp will enable users to top up their mobile accounts for major service providers, including Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea. This feature is expected to roll out to all users across India in the coming two weeks, as confirmed by PayU.

Despite boasting over 500 million users in India and launching its payment service in 2020, WhatsApp has struggled to make significant inroads into the digital payments sector, which is largely dominated by competitors like PhonePe and Google Pay. Recent data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) indicates that WhatsApp processed approximately 130 million transactions in March, a stark contrast to PhonePe's 10.5 billion and Google Pay's 7.5 billion transactions during the same month.

Even after the NPCI lifted restrictions on WhatsApp Pay in late 2024, allowing the service to fully engage its user base, the app continues to trail behind its rivals. However, since the removal of onboarding limits, WhatsApp's transaction volume has seen a notable increase, more than doubling from about 61 million in January 2025.

This latest feature is part of WhatsApp's broader strategy to expand its payment capabilities within the app. Users can already pay bills, book metro tickets, and access various government services through chat interfaces. To facilitate these transactions, WhatsApp has introduced a new rupee (₹) icon on its home screen, making it easier for users to navigate to the payments section.

Ravi Garg, the director of business messaging at Meta India, emphasized that these updates aim to simplify everyday transactions, thereby increasing the app's utility and engagement beyond mere messaging. As WhatsApp continues to innovate, it is positioning itself to redefine how users interact with digital payments in India.
