WhatsApp Introduces a 'Lockdown Mode' for Enhanced Security

WhatsApp has launched a new 'Lockdown Mode' to enhance security for high-risk users, offering advanced privacy features and stricter controls against cyber threats.

WhatsApp Introduces a 'Lockdown Mode' for Enhanced Security

In a bid to enhance user protection, WhatsApp has launched new security features aimed at safeguarding individuals at high risk, including journalists, activists, and public officials. This initiative comes as a response to the existing Lockdown Mode offered by Apple, providing a similar level of security against cyber threats.

Named Strict Account Settings, this mode builds upon WhatsApp's robust end-to-end encryption, introducing additional privacy measures and stricter controls over interactions with unknown contacts. While most users may find these measures excessive, they are crucial for those handling sensitive information that could attract cybercriminals.

WhatsApp's recent updates mirror Apple's Lockdown Mode, which restricts attachments, link previews, and communications from unfamiliar contacts, while also disabling wired connections to external devices. Similar protective features can be found in Android's Advanced Protection.

How Strict Account Settings Safeguard High-Risk Users

The Strict Account Settings automatically activate existing privacy and security features, adding several restrictions to enhance user communication and visibility on the platform.

  • Two-step verification and security alerts are enabled, notifying users of any changes to a contact's security code.

  • Link previews are turned off.

  • Messages from unknown accounts in large volumes are blocked.

  • Only contacts or those on a designated list can view personal information such as last seen status, profile photo, and links.

  • Group additions are restricted to known contacts or those on the user's pre-established list.

Activating Strict Account Settings on WhatsApp

To enable these settings, navigate to Settings > Privacy > Advanced and toggle on Strict Account Settings. Please note that changes must be made on the primary device and cannot be adjusted via the web. This feature will be rolled out gradually and may not be available immediately.
