WhatsApp is rolling out a new wave of security upgrades designed to make account protection more flexible and easier to use. The latest changes include a stronger version of two-step verification, support for multiple passkeys, and added context for calls from unknown numbers.
Until now, WhatsApp's extra verification layer relied on a six-digit PIN. With the new update, users can choose a longer alphanumeric code that can include special characters, making it harder to predict and more resilient against account takeovers.
The app is also expanding passkey support. Users can now store more than one passkey on the same account, a practical step for people who move between iPhone and Android devices. Passkeys let users sign in with Face ID or fingerprint recognition instead of traditional passwords, reducing exposure to phishing attempts.
For Android users, incoming calls from unknown numbers will now come with more context, such as whether the caller is based in another country and whether any groups are shared in common. The feature is aimed at helping people make quicker and more informed decisions before answering.
The update fits into WhatsApp's broader push toward simpler account management, following recent additions such as usernames and new subscription-based features. As messaging platforms continue to refine security and identity tools, the next phase of digital communication may become both safer and more seamless.
