WeWard Adds a Step-Based App Lock to Encourage More Walking

WeWard launches Walking Mode, a step-based app lock that encourages users to walk more, reduce screen time, and build healthier digital habits.

Fitness app WeWard is introducing a new feature called Walking Mode, designed to keep selected apps locked until users complete a chosen step target. The idea blends movement goals with digital self-control, giving users a practical way to walk more and spend less time on their phones.

With the new setting, people can choose which apps to restrict and decide how many steps are needed before access is restored. For example, a user could set a 3,000-step goal before opening social platforms such as TikTok or Instagram. The feature is fully customizable, making it adaptable to different routines and wellness goals.

WeWard has already built its model around daily activity, rewarding users with in-app currency called Wards, which can be exchanged for cash, gift cards, or donations. The app also includes a leaderboard system that adds a light competitive element among friends. Walking Mode extends that approach by connecting physical activity with mindful device use.

Backed by tennis star and investor Venus Williams, the France-based platform says it has 30 million users across 29 countries, including 4 million in the United States. The company also reports that its product has helped raise walking time by nearly 25%.

WeWard co-founder Yves Benchimol says the goal is to design products that encourage healthier habits in everyday life rather than simply maximizing attention. The company says it earns revenue through in-app purchases, affiliate marketing, premium subscriptions, and advertising.

As digital wellness tools evolve, features like this could shape a future where technology supports healthier routines with greater intention.
