Wayve opens $85M employee tender offer at $8.5B valuation

UK-based autonomous driving startup Wayve has launched an $85 million tender offer, giving employees the chance to sell part of their vested shares at the company's latest $8.5 billion valuation.

The offer is backed by existing and new investors and follows Wayve's $1.2 billion Series D round completed in February, which brought in major names from the technology and investment world.

This is the company's second employee liquidity program, after a similar move alongside its Series C funding round in 2024. The approach reflects a wider shift among AI startups, where tender offers are increasingly used to reward teams and strengthen long-term retention.

Wayve builds self-driving software through a self-learning model that relies on data rather than preloaded high-definition maps. Its system is designed to adapt more flexibly to different roads, vehicles, and driving conditions.

The company has expanded rapidly, growing to about 1,200 employees over the past year. It is also preparing robotaxi pilot programs with Uber and plans to bring its AI driving technology into Nissan's next-generation driver-assist systems from 2027.

As autonomous mobility matures, employee ownership models like this may help accelerate innovation and shape the future of intelligent transportation.
