Waymo has received approval to join Ontario's automated vehicle pilot program, clearing the way for the company to begin work in Toronto. A public robotaxi service is not launching yet; the company plans to advance in stages.
First, Waymo vehicles will be driven manually to map local streets in detail. The company then plans to test its autonomous technology on public roads with a human safety operator aboard. If testing progresses, operators may eventually leave the driver's seat, followed by public rides.
Toronto is part of Waymo's wider international expansion. The company already operates robotaxi services in 15 U.S. cities and is testing in London and Tokyo. Its Toronto plans also include a partnership with local fleet-management firm Element Fleet Management, with the company anticipating support for hundreds of jobs in areas such as maintenance, customer service and operations.
Toronto's winter conditions will provide a new test for Waymo's vehicles and operating systems. The experience could help shape how autonomous transport adapts to a wider range of climates and urban environments.
