Waymo is broadening its robotaxi services, now available to the public in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Orlando. This expansion marks a significant step in the company's mission to enhance its autonomous vehicle offerings.
The launch will follow a familiar pattern, inviting select users of the Waymo app to experience their first rides starting this Tuesday. As the rollout progresses, more users will be gradually added, ultimately allowing anyone with the app to request a ride.
This latest addition underscores Waymo's ambitious growth strategy. Previously, the company operated commercial robotaxi services primarily in Phoenix, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Alphabet's CEO, Sundar Pichai, noted that Waymo was already facilitating over 200,000 rides weekly.
In the past year, Waymo has notably expanded its services in existing locations, especially in San Francisco, where its operational area now extends along Highway 101 to San Jose. The company also provides access to three major airports, including San Francisco International, and has formed partnerships with Uber in cities like Atlanta and Austin. Recently, Waymo introduced its services to Miami, further broadening its reach.
While Waymo has not disclosed the latest ridership figures, it was reported that the company had surpassed 400,000 rides per week, with expectations that this number has increased since then.
Looking ahead, Waymo intends to introduce robotaxi services in several additional cities this year, including Denver and Washington, D.C. The company recently secured $16 billion in funding, which will support its expansion efforts and enhance its fleet, currently consisting of approximately 3,000 robotaxis across six markets.
Initially, Waymo plans to deploy dozens of vehicles in the new cities, scaling operations based on rider demand over the coming months. The company is also set to expand its workforce to ensure efficient monitoring and support for the robotaxis, with around 70 remote assistance workers currently employed.
Despite facing scrutiny from safety regulators, Waymo remains committed to its ambitious goal of achieving over one million rides per week by the end of the year. The company is also preparing for robotaxi services in more than 20 cities, setting the stage for a transformative shift in urban transportation.
