Waymo is gradually restoring freeway service to its robotaxi network after a temporary pause tied to software improvements near construction zones. The rollout begins in Phoenix, the company's first driverless ride-hailing market, before expanding to Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area in the coming days.
According to Waymo, the update is designed to improve how its vehicles interpret complex highway environments. Enhanced scene recognition and routing now help the system respond more smoothly around construction areas, supporting a broader return to high-speed travel across its service map.
The move marks an important step for the company's autonomous ride-hailing strategy, especially because freeway access can shorten trip times and make airport connections more efficient. Waymo first introduced freeway rides in late 2025 across Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, later extending the feature to Miami.
The company had temporarily restricted these routes after identifying cases in which robotaxis entered highway sections closed for construction. Waymo then completed a fleet-wide software update and is now reintroducing freeway operations in phases.
