This collaboration will enable Waymo's robotaxis to collect data on potholes and share it with Waze, which is accessible to both city officials and app users.
The initiative, announced on Thursday, will initially focus on five key markets: Austin, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Waymo has already identified approximately 500 potholes in these areas, and as the program expands, more cities will gain access to this valuable data.
In addition to benefiting municipalities, the data collected will also be available to anyone using the Waze app in the regions where Waymo operates, allowing users to verify the accuracy of pothole locations. This feature builds on Waze's existing capability for users to report potholes, thereby enhancing the overall reporting system.
Equipped with advanced sensors such as cameras, lidar, and radar, Waymo's robotaxis are ideally suited for gathering information about roadway hazards. While other companies utilize various technologies to monitor traffic patterns, Waymo stands out as a pioneer in employing robotaxis for this purpose.
