Watermill Center Appoints Charles Chemin as Artistic Director

The Watermill Center, a renowned interdisciplinary hub in Water Mill, New York, has announced the appointment of Charles Chemin as its new artistic director. This transition marks a significant moment as Chemin succeeds the late Robert Wilson, who played a pivotal role in the center's founding and artistic direction.

Chemin, who has collaborated with Wilson since 1992, will guide the artistic vision of the center, working closely with managing director Elise Herget and curator Noah Khoshbin. His selection comes as part of a thoughtful succession plan initiated by Wilson before his passing in August 2025.

Throughout his career, Chemin has directed independent works at prestigious venues, including La Pergola National Theater in Florence and the Avignon Opera. He has also co-directed several productions at Watermill, such as Mary Said and PESSOA, showcasing his deep-rooted connection to the center.

Reflecting on his early experiences, Chemin described Watermill as a creative laboratory where artists collaborated and innovated. "In those early years, we were workshopping and rehearsing, developing the next plays that we would do," he noted. This spirit of experimentation continues to resonate within the organization.

William Campbell, chair of the Watermill board, expressed confidence in Chemin's leadership, stating, "His profound understanding of Robert Wilson's vision, coupled with his artistic rigor, ensures the Center will thrive as a space for interdisciplinary dialogue and global collaboration." Chemin is committed to maintaining Watermill's legacy of welcoming diverse artists and fostering an inclusive environment.

Since 2020, Chemin has also served as the artistic director of the International Summer Program, a role that has allowed him to shape the future trajectory of Watermill following Wilson's legacy. "We had Robert Wilson's vision with us, always. There is a continuity, even after his passing," Chemin remarked, emphasizing the ongoing influence of Wilson's artistic philosophy.

Chemin recognizes Wilson as a visionary in the arts, stating, "He's leaving us something: sentiment, a fundament, a founding vision on which we can expand and create our own." Under his leadership, Watermill is poised to continue its tradition of innovation and creativity, embracing the evolution of contemporary art.
