Henry Soong is on a mission to revolutionize the world of microdrama with Watch Club, aiming to create vertical series that stand out in a crowded market. Unlike many apps that churn out formulaic and often cringe-worthy content, Soong believes there's potential for something much greater.
"Most of these stories revolve around clichéd tropes, like a poor girl falling for a secret billionaire who happens to be a werewolf," Soong stated. "While there's an audience for that, I envision a platform that transcends these simplistic narratives."
Soong's perspective may seem bold, but it's not unfounded. Competitors like ReelShort and DramaBox have made billions through in-app purchases, often relying on mediocre content. Soong's goal with Watch Club is to produce high-quality microdramas featuring union talent, setting it apart from the competition.
With a background in product management at Meta, Soong understands the importance of community in television. He aims to integrate a social network into Watch Club, allowing users to engage with each other over the content they love. "Imagine watching a show and then discussing it with friends or other fans online," he explained, highlighting the communal aspect of viewing experiences.
Currently, fans debate theories about popular shows on various platforms, but Soong sees the opportunity to combine the viewing experience with fan interaction all in one place. The monetization strategy for Watch Club is still being developed, but initial funding has been secured from prominent investors, suggesting strong belief in the concept.
Soong has enlisted Devon Albert-Stone as the founding producer and plans to hire writers from the WGA to craft a series of compelling shows. "We collaborate with talented individuals who may not have the budget of major studios but are given the creative freedom to explore innovative ideas," he noted.
With its first series, "Return Offer," set to launch soon, Watch Club is poised to test its vision of high-quality storytelling in the microdrama format. "Our aim is to create a new standard that could redefine streaming television, all while fostering a fun and creative environment for our team," Soong concluded.
