Walmart is rolling out Tap to Pay in select stores and Sam's Club locations, with nationwide U.S. support planned by year-end and gas stations later.

Walmart Brings Tap to Pay to Stores and Sam's Club

Walmart is preparing a major checkout upgrade by adding Tap to Pay across its stores and Sam's Club locations. The move will let shoppers complete purchases with smartphones, smartwatches, contactless cards, and other compatible payment methods.

The company also said customers will be able to load Walmart, Sam's Club, and OnePay cards into a digital wallet for a faster checkout experience. Traditional payment options such as cash, card insertion, and Walmart Pay will remain available.

Rollout timeline

The new payment feature begins rolling out on Aug. 24 in select Walmart and Sam's Club locations. Walmart expects all U.S. stores to support Tap to Pay by the end of the year, with gas stations scheduled to follow by mid-2027.

As contactless payments become a standard part of everyday retail, Walmart's expansion signals a broader shift toward smoother, more flexible shopping experiences that could shape the future of in-store commerce.
