Vint Cerf, one of the key figures behind the modern internet, is now lending his expertise to a new effort focused on how AI agents can be identified across the open web. After stepping away from Google, Cerf has joined Innovation Labs as an adviser to help shape a more transparent digital framework.

Innovation Labs, a subsidiary of Identity Digital, is exploring how domain-name infrastructure could support accountability for autonomous systems. The group believes that as AI agents take on more tasks online, a reliable identity layer will become essential for trust, coordination, and oversight.

At the center of the proposal is DNSid, a registry concept that links each agent to an existing domain name and records its registration with cryptographic proof. The model is being tested with several large technology and identity companies, according to the organization.

Cerf says the challenge is not only technical, but also conceptual: who authorizes an agent, how its identity is verified, and what responsibility follows when it acts. He notes that broad adoption will likely depend on whether any standard proves useful enough for different systems to work together smoothly.

Innovation Labs says its approach is designed to remain focused on standards rather than ownership of registration data, a choice meant to keep the model open and interoperable. As AI agents become more capable, the internet may move toward a new era where machine-to-machine interaction is as important as human browsing. The future of the web may be shaped by how clearly these digital actors can be named, trusted, and connected.
