Venmo is set to introduce a significant redesign over the coming months, aiming to enhance the app's usability, social features, and navigation. This marks the most substantial update since 2021.

The timing of this overhaul is particularly noteworthy, as PayPal, Venmo's parent company, is undergoing a restructuring process to establish Venmo as an independent business unit, potentially paving the way for a future sale. Reports indicate that Stripe has shown interest in acquiring PayPal, making the redesign appear more strategic than merely routine.

The rollout of the new features begins this week, with the complete redesign expected to be available to all users by fall. One of the most noticeable changes will be the updated feed, which will now showcase a broader array of visuals and larger images. Users will have enhanced interaction options, including reactions and quick action buttons like "Pay Again" and "Say Thanks." Additionally, the feed will become more personalized, presenting tailored cashback offers and product suggestions based on previous purchases.

Another exciting feature is the "Give a Shoutout" button, allowing users to endorse their favorite local businesses directly within the app. Alexis Sowa, Venmo's senior vice president and general manager, highlighted that this change responds to younger audiences' desire to support local merchants, enabling them to provide social proof of their endorsements.

The redesign will also introduce two new tabs: "Send" and "Money." The Send tab will prioritize frequent contacts, presenting them as a row of profile icons for quick access. The bill-splitting feature will be more accessible, allowing users to split expenses with up to 30 individuals and enabling gift sending and payment scheduling.

Meanwhile, the Money tab will facilitate expense management, including access to Teen Accounts and Crypto. A new Rewards tab will consolidate limited-time offers and house Venmo's Stash program, which offers users up to 5% cashback when shopping with their preferred brands.

This redesign stems from extensive user research, revealing that many users were unaware of the app's existing features. Sowa noted that the insights gained indicated a strong need for better visibility of functionalities.

This update aligns with a broader trend where younger users expect payment apps to function more like social platforms, echoing features seen in apps like Verse and Revolut that allow users to share financial activities. Venmo's evolution aims to meet these expectations and enhance user engagement as it navigates potential changes in ownership.
