Vega Secures $120M Series B to Innovate Cyber Threat Detection for Enterprises

In today's digital landscape, enterprises are inundated with vast amounts of security data. Traditional tools, such as Splunk, necessitate that organizations consolidate all their data in a single location before identifying threats. This outdated method is not only time-consuming but also costly, particularly in cloud environments where data is distributed and volumes are surging.

Vega Security, an AI-driven cybersecurity startup, aims to revolutionize this model by conducting security operations where the data resides, whether in cloud services, data lakes, or existing storage systems. Recently, Vega has successfully raised $120 million in a Series B funding round to expand this vision.

Led by Accel and joined by investors like Cyberstarts, Redpoint, and CRV, this funding round nearly doubles Vega's valuation to $700 million, bringing its total funding to $185 million. The capital will be utilized to enhance its AI-native security operations suite, strengthen its market presence, and pursue global expansion.

Shay Sandler, co-founder and CEO of Vega, expressed to TechCrunch that the prevailing SIEM (security information and event management) model, which has dominated the industry for the past two decades, is not only prohibitively expensive but also increasingly ineffective in the face of modern threats. He emphasized that the existing framework can inadvertently increase vulnerability to cyber attackers, especially in intricate cloud settings.

"Vega has established a new operational framework that empowers organizations to harness their enterprise data effectively for incident response readiness, minimizing complexity and costs," Sandler noted. "Our goal is to facilitate AI-native detection and response capabilities wherever the data exists, at scale."

Sandler's background includes service in the Israeli military's cybersecurity unit and a role as a founding employee at Granulate, which was acquired by Intel for $650 million in 2022. His experience has drawn attention from investors like Andrei Brasoveanu of Accel, who recognizes Vega's ambitious vision in a market largely dominated by Splunk.

Brasoveanu highlighted that traditional SIEM solutions have faced criticism for their inability to scale effectively, particularly with the exponential growth of data driven by AI. He remarked, "By centralizing data, companies essentially limit their customers' options."

Despite the challenges of shifting from established solutions, Sandler aims for Vega's "North Star" to be the creation of a more cost-effective and efficient detection solution, designed to minimize the transition burden for large enterprises.

Vega's innovative approach appears to be resonating well, as the company has secured multi-million-dollar contracts with major banks, healthcare organizations, and Fortune 500 companies, including cloud-centric firms like Instacart.

Sandler stated, "The willingness of these enterprises to partner with a two-year-old startup underscores the urgency of the problem and the limitations of existing solutions, which often require unrealistic operational changes or extensive data migrations. Vega allows them to seamlessly integrate and realize immediate value in detection response."
