The U.S. and European law enforcement agencies have successfully shut down LeakBase, a prominent online platform recognized as one of the largest forums for cybercriminal activity. This site was notorious for facilitating the exchange of stolen passwords and hacking tools.
Earlier this week, authorities executed a coordinated operation that led to the seizure of LeakBase, which boasted a community of over 142,000 members and featured more than 215,000 messages exchanged among users.
Operating since 2021, LeakBase maintained an extensive archive of compromised databases, including vast collections of account credentials, credit card details, and banking information.
This operation is part of a broader initiative to combat the trade in stolen credentials, which have increasingly been exploited for unauthorized access to personal accounts, data theft, and cryptocurrency fraud.
Europol announced that nearly 100 law enforcement actions were conducted globally, targeting the top 37 active participants on the forum. In a strategic move, the FBI redirected the domain of LeakBase to servers under their control, effectively rendering the site inactive.
As a result of this crackdown, LeakBase now displays a seizure notice, indicating that all forum contents, including private messages and IP address logs, have been secured. According to reports, the investigation has led to over 13 arrests and the interrogation of 33 individuals, culminating in the capture of the complete database.
