UpScrolled Faces Challenges in Content Moderation Amid Rapid Growth

UpScrolled, a rapidly expanding social network that gained popularity following TikTok's ownership transition in the U.S., is encountering significant challenges with content moderation. As of January, the platform has surpassed 2.5 million users, yet reports indicate that it struggles to address usernames and hashtags containing offensive language.

TechCrunch, after receiving feedback from UpScrolled users, confirmed the presence of various racial slurs and hate speech within usernames on the platform. Some usernames blatantly featured slurs, while others combined them with different terms, highlighting a concerning trend.

Despite notifying UpScrolled about these offensive usernames, many remained active days later, indicating a lag in the platform's response. Furthermore, instances of hate speech were also discovered within hashtags and accompanying text in photo and video content.

Notably, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has raised alarms about UpScrolled becoming a hub for extremist content, including antisemitic material. Founded in 2025, UpScrolled promotes itself as a platform that grants every user "equal power." Since June 2025, it has achieved over 4 million downloads across iOS and Android devices.

While UpScrolled's FAQ states that the app does not engage in censorship of opinions, it also outlines policies against content involving hate speech and illegal activities. However, it is evident that the platform is struggling to enforce these guidelines effectively.

This challenge is not unique to UpScrolled; many social networks face similar issues, especially when experiencing a rapid influx of new users. For example, Bluesky encountered comparable problems with slurs in usernames earlier this year.

After initial inquiries, UpScrolled's founder, Issam Hijazi, acknowledged the presence of harmful content in a recent video, emphasizing the company's commitment to fostering a respectful digital environment. He stated that UpScrolled is actively enhancing its moderation team and technological infrastructure to better manage harmful content.
