The University of Bonn in Germany has reported that several fossils and other museum pieces have disappeared from its Goldfuß Museum, and it is now asking the public to help identify any items that may surface for sale or appear in collections.
According to the university, the exact timing of the loss remains unclear. The missing objects were discovered during renovation work that began in December 2023 and is still underway. The institution shared details of the items on August 7 and urged anyone with useful information to contact the Bonn Police's Criminal Investigation Division.
Officials also advised the public not to approach sellers directly, but to pass along any relevant leads. Beyond their market value, the university emphasized that the missing exhibits carry major scientific importance, since they belong to a historic collection linked to founder Georg August Goldfuß and were used for research and teaching.
The discovery came after wooden protective enclosures were removed and staff found the display cases broken open. The university says the items were identified through internal records and photographs, helping create a clearer picture of what is now missing.
The case adds to a broader pattern of museum thefts across Europe, where cultural and scientific collections continue to draw attention for their historical value. As institutions strengthen preservation and security, such incidents may also accelerate new approaches to protecting heritage for future generations.
