The Uffizi Gallery in Florence, renowned for its exceptional collection of Italian Renaissance masterpieces, has responded to claims regarding a recent cyber attack that allegedly compromised its security. Reports suggested that hackers gained "access everywhere" within the museum, but the Uffizi has firmly denied these assertions.
On April 3, an article in the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera detailed claims that the museum's IT network was breached on February 1. It was reported that the attackers demanded a ransom from museum director Simone Verde and threatened to leak sensitive information on the dark web.
However, the Uffizi clarified that while it was indeed targeted, no sensitive data was stolen, and crucially, security maps and personal employee details were not compromised. This clarification was supported by a statement released shortly after the initial report.
Despite the museum's reassurances, Corriere della Sera highlighted several unusual occurrences post-attack, such as the abrupt closure of a section of the Pitti Palace, which is part of the Uffizi complex, and the swift relocation of valuable jewels from the Treasury of the Grand Dukes to a secure vault. These actions raised eyebrows, especially given the timing.
In response to these concerns, the Uffizi stated that the closure and the jewel relocation were part of a planned renovation, which had been in discussion since the previous fall. The museum had announced renovation plans in July 2025, although the timing of the jewel removal led to speculation about the true nature of the events.
Further claims suggested that the Uffizi's servers were wiped clean, resulting in the loss of photographs and documents. Alarmingly, there were allegations that hackers accessed critical information including entry codes, passwords, and even the locations of surveillance equipment. The source of the breach was traced back to outdated software used for managing low-resolution images on the museum's website.
Despite the challenges posed by this incident, the Uffizi Gallery remains open to the public, showcasing works by legendary artists such as Raphael, Caravaggio, and Botticelli, ensuring that the cultural heritage continues to thrive.
