Uber Embarks on a New Era of Asset Ownership in Autonomous Vehicles

In a significant shift towards asset ownership, Uber is investing heavily in the autonomous vehicle sector, committing over $10 billion to acquire autonomous vehicles and stake in technology developers. According to recent insights from the Financial Times, this includes approximately $2.5 billion in direct investments, while the remaining $7.5 billion is earmarked for purchasing robotaxis in the coming years.

Uber's strategy has evolved markedly, moving from a focus on being asset-light to now pursuing ownership of physical assets. This transition is reminiscent of its earlier ventures into asset-heavy projects, such as the establishment of Uber Elevate for electric air taxis and the in-house autonomous vehicle unit, Uber ATG, during 2015-2018. However, in 2020, Uber divested many of these initiatives, selling its ATG division to Aurora and its air taxi business to Joby Aviation, while retaining equity stakes in these companies.

Now, as Uber re-enters this asset-heavy phase, it seems to be concentrating on acquiring fleets of robotaxis from other manufacturers rather than developing the technology internally. This strategic pivot could result in intriguing implications for Uber's financial structure and operational model.

The current approach might not align with the original vision set by Uber's founders, but it holds potential for achieving similar objectives.
