Spanish police have recovered three religious artworks stolen from churches in Valladolid during the summer. One object remains missing as the investigation continues.
The recovered works include a Baroque wooden angel from the Church of Vera Cruz, a copy of Ecce Homo by Renaissance painter Luis de Morales, and a panel depicting the Seventh Station of the Cross. The latter two pieces belonged to the Church of San Pablo.
A man was arrested in Valladolid on September 17 in connection with a series of church thefts reported between July and September. The recovered artworks' location and the circumstances of their discovery have not been disclosed.
The outstanding piece is a 19th-century polychrome wooden angel from the Church of San Felipe Neri. Following the thefts, the Archbishopric of Valladolid urged churches to strengthen security, keep photographic inventories and report suspected thefts promptly.
Recovering these works highlights how coordinated preservation efforts can help safeguard cultural heritage and keep historic art accessible to future generations.
