Three Key Highlights for February 4, 2026

Explore today's highlights, including the decline in wheat futures, a promising U.S.-India trade agreement for agriculture, and wintry weather forecasts for the Midwest.

1. Decline in Wheat Futures Amid Strong Dollar and Kansas Crop Conditions

Wheat futures experienced a downward trend in overnight trading as the U.S. dollar regained strength and crop conditions in Kansas showed slight improvement.

This week, the U.S. dollar has bounced back after hitting a four-year low, making dollar-denominated agricultural products less appealing to international buyers.

The dollar's value has increased by 1.3% this week, with a 0.1% rise noted overnight.

Additionally, stable crop conditions in Kansas, the leading U.S. producer of winter wheat, have contributed to the price drop.

According to USDA reports, approximately 61% of the winter crop is rated as good or excellent, a slight increase from 60% last month.

Topsoil moisture levels are reported at 65% adequate or surplus, while subsoil moisture stands at 63% adequate or surplus, both showing improvement from the previous month.

Wheat futures fell by 3¢ to $5.25 3/4 per bushel, while Kansas City futures dropped 4 1/4¢ to $5.30 1/2 per bushel.

Corn futures also saw a decrease of 1 3/4¢, settling at $4.26 3/4 per bushel. Meanwhile, soybean futures for March delivery declined by 2 1/2¢ to $10.63 1/4 per bushel.

2. New U.S.-India Trade Agreement to Boost Agriculture, Details Awaited

A new trade agreement between the U.S. and India is expected to enhance U.S. agricultural exports, although specific details remain limited.

President Trump announced on social media that tariffs on Indian goods will be reduced from 25% to 18%, alongside the removal of an additional levy related to previous oil purchases from Russia.

India has committed to ceasing its purchases of Russian oil as part of this agreement.

Trump stated that India will invest "$500 billion in U.S. energy, technology, agriculture, coal, and various other products."

However, the lack of detailed information raises questions, including the timeline for implementing the agreement and the deadline for halting Russian oil purchases.

USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins highlighted that this deal will improve market access for American agricultural products in India, potentially increasing prices and benefiting rural economies.

3. Wintry Weather Forecasted for Minnesota and Wisconsin

Parts of central and western Minnesota are expected to experience freezing drizzle this morning, which may lead to slippery road conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

Light snow in central and northern Wisconsin could also create hazardous travel conditions.

A wintry mix is anticipated across Minnesota and Wisconsin, with forecasts predicting up to 2 inches of snow by early tomorrow morning.

The National Weather Service indicated that a rain-snow mix will persist throughout Thursday, with freezing drizzle likely creating icy conditions in certain areas of north-central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin.
