Threads has unveiled a new feature aimed at streamlining direct messaging on its platform. The Meta-owned social network announced on Thursday that users participating in the test can simply type "DM me" or "Message me" in their posts or replies. This action will automatically create a link that invites others to initiate a private conversation.
By clicking on this link, users are directed to a one-on-one chat with the individual. If both users follow each other, the message lands directly in the recipient's primary inbox. However, if the connection isn't mutual, the message will be filtered into the "Message Requests" folder, effectively minimizing unwanted spam.
This shortcut eliminates the need to visit a user's profile to start a DM, making communication more efficient. Although Threads was initially late to roll out a direct messaging feature, this latest update signifies a commitment to enhancing messaging as a core aspect of the platform.
The new DM shortcut is currently being tested with select users in the U.S. and Canada. As with any test feature, the timeline for a broader rollout remains uncertain. This addition is part of a series of updates aimed at improving user experience on Threads, which recently introduced an AI-driven feature for personalizing feeds and the ability to share posts directly to Instagram Stories without leaving the app.
Moreover, Threads is exploring innovative features such as in-message games, showcasing its dedication to evolving the social media landscape. Recent data from market intelligence firm Similarweb indicates that Threads has surpassed X in daily mobile usage, boasting 141.5 million daily active users compared to X's 125 million, although X still leads in web usage.
As Threads continues to innovate and enhance its platform, users can look forward to more engaging features that foster community interaction and connectivity.
