The Joy of Rocking Out: A Dad's Journey in Music

A dad's journey from sidelined soccer parent to rock band member showcases the joy of music and friendship, emphasizing the importance of pursuing passions.

The Joy of Rocking Out: A Dad's Journey in Music

As a soccer dad standing on the sidelines, I found myself sipping lukewarm coffee while watching my son play. It was during one of those typical Saturday afternoons that a casual conversation with a fellow dad, Eric, sparked a new passion in my life. After hearing me play my electric guitar, he encouraged me to reconnect with music.

That simple interaction led to an invitation from another dad, Bill, to jam together. His basement turned out to be a treasure trove of musical equipment, and despite my initial lack of experience, we found a rhythm together. Our musical journey quickly expanded to include more dads, forming a band that would eventually take on the name "foodbaby," inspired by Bill's daughter.

For years, I had shelved my musical dreams, haunted by a failed audition in high school. However, with newfound camaraderie, I began to live out my aspirations. Our first performance at a local high school graduation party was a mix of excitement and nerves, even if the audience of teenagers quickly drifted outside during our set!

Over time, our group evolved from playing covers of classic rock songs to creating original music, culminating in our debut album, Midnight Snack. Each member contributed their unique style, and I even began writing my own songs during the pandemic, discovering a love for singing in the process.

Now, after fifteen years, foodbaby remains a tight-knit group, performing primarily at local events like Porchfest. While we don't play often, the joy of sharing our music with friends and family is irreplaceable. The camaraderie and support we experience while playing together is a testament to the power of music in fostering connections.

Even when faced with challenges, like unpredictable weather during performances, we find joy in the moments shared. Our sons, now grown, have stepped in to help us, embodying the lessons we taught them years ago about teamwork and dedication.

Music, especially at this stage in our lives, is a reminder of the importance of pursuing passions and nurturing friendships. As we continue to play, we are grateful for the opportunity to create and share our art, knowing that these moments are fleeting yet profoundly impactful.
