Tesla's quarterly earnings calls are increasingly sounding less like a traditional car-company update and more like a preview of an AI-driven future. The company still delivered nearly half a million vehicles last quarter, and car sales remained the main source of revenue, but Elon Musk's remarks have steadily moved toward artificial intelligence, robotaxis and robotics.
To track that shift, Hudson Labs, a New York-based financial research firm, analyzed seven years of Tesla earnings-call transcripts using its Co-Analyst tool. The review, based on S&P Market Intelligence transcripts dating back to 2019, assigned topics to each sentence and measured how often they appeared.
The findings show a clear change in emphasis. Musk now spends close to half of his speaking time on AI-related themes, including autonomous driving and robotaxis. In 2022, those topics typically accounted for only 15% to 20% of his remarks. His focus on Optimus, Tesla's humanoid robot, has also expanded sharply since the project was introduced in 2021.
Over the past year, Optimus has taken up at least 10% of Musk's comments, and on Tesla's third-quarter 2025 call it represented nearly a third of his discussion. Meanwhile, the share of time devoted to cars and manufacturing has fallen to less than one-third.
Other Tesla leaders, including chief financial officer Vaibhav Taneja and vice president of engineering Lars Moravy, have been slower to make the same pivot. Their remarks still devote a significant portion to the automotive business, while AI, robotaxi and Full Self-Driving remain the next major themes.
The contrast reflects Tesla's evolving identity: a company still anchored by vehicles, yet increasingly presented as a platform for autonomy, robotics and software. As that narrative grows, Tesla's future may be shaped as much by intelligent machines as by electric cars.
