Tenga, the renowned Japanese manufacturer of intimate products, informed its customers about a data breach in a recent communication obtained by TechCrunch.
According to the message, an unauthorized individual accessed the professional email account of one of Tenga's employees. This breach potentially exposed customer names, email addresses, and past correspondence, which may have included order details and inquiries related to customer service.
Furthermore, the hacker reportedly sent unsolicited emails to the contacts within the compromised account, impacting customers as well.
While Tenga did not disclose the total number of affected customers, the company noted on its website that it has distributed over 162 million products globally.
Given the sensitive nature of the products, the order details and service inquiries may contain personal information that many customers would prefer to keep private.
The company has advised its customers to update their passwords as a precaution, despite not confirming whether passwords were compromised, and to remain alert for suspicious emails, particularly those originating from the breached employee's account.
In response to the incident, Tenga has implemented several security measures, including resetting the compromised employee's credentials and activating multi-factor authentication across its systems. However, it remains unclear if this security feature was previously in place on the affected email account.
Founded in 2005 and headquartered in Tokyo, Tenga specializes in a wide range of products primarily designed for men. It is uncertain whether the breach impacted customers outside the United States, as the notification was specifically sent from Tenga Store USA.
Tenga joins a list of companies in the intimate product sector that have faced similar security breaches, highlighting the ongoing challenges in maintaining data security in this industry.
