Team USA Bobsled's Unique Training Method Ahead of Milano-Cortina Games

As the Winter Olympics approach, many may envision athletes training in snowy landscapes with specialized equipment. However, Team USA Bobsled demonstrates that effective training can happen anywhere.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Chris Fogt, a three-time Olympian and silver medalist who coaches the team, bobsledding is a "blue collar sport." He emphasizes that as long as athletes have access to basic equipment like a weight rack and some weights, they can train in any weather condition. "We train wherever we can--be it snow, rain, or sunshine," he explains.

Adaptability is crucial for many team members, especially since some are active-duty soldiers. Their participation in the Olympics is facilitated by the Army World Class Athlete Program (WCAP), which supports soldier-athletes in their pursuit of excellence in sports, including the Winter Olympics.

Recently, Fogt showcased a typical bobsled workout routine to fitness expert Ebenezer Samuel. Unlike conventional gym-goers who might focus on completing 10 to 12 reps, Fogt prioritizes speed and power. His workouts involve lower repetitions with heavier weights to replicate the explosive movements required when pushing a bobsled. Training in cold weather is also strategic, as it builds the mental resilience necessary to endure challenging conditions.

"We take pride in our rugged, gritty training style, reminiscent of Rocky IV," Fogt remarks. "Embracing the cold and tough environments gives us a competitive edge." In a recent performance, Team USA, led by Frank Del Duca and Joshua Williamson, secured a commendable fourth place in the two-man bobsled finals.

For those interested in the team's training regimen, Fogt's workout includes:
