In the wake of Google's recent overhaul of its search functionality, which introduced an AI-driven model, many users are turning to DuckDuckGo, a privacy-centric search engine. This shift has been notably influenced by a growing sentiment among consumers who prefer to opt out of AI-based search results.

During Google's annual I/O developer conference, the tech giant revealed that traditional search results featuring blue links would be replaced by an AI agent capable of answering queries and performing various tasks. However, this transition has sparked considerable backlash, with critics arguing that it complicates the user experience and may undermine the open web.

As users express dissatisfaction with Google's changes, DuckDuckGo has seen a remarkable increase in app installations. The company reported an 18.1% growth in U.S. app installs from May 20 to May 25, with the peak reaching 30.5% on May 25. On iOS devices, the growth rate was even more impressive, averaging 33% and peaking at 69.9%.

In addition to app installs, visits to DuckDuckGo's AI-free search page have surged, with an average growth of 22.7% week-over-week, reaching a peak of 27.7% on May 24. This page is designed to turn off all AI features by default, allowing users to enjoy a traditional search experience.

DuckDuckGo CEO Gabriel Weinberg highlighted the importance of user choice, stating, "Google is force-feeding AI with no way to opt out. We want to be the place that puts users in charge and allows them to decide how much or how little AI they want." This commitment to user control and privacy is resonating with many who are seeking alternatives.

The company also offers a free AI product called Duck.ai, which does not require user accounts and ensures privacy by stripping IP addresses before reaching model providers. DuckDuckGo emphasizes that it does not collect search histories or use data for AI training, further appealing to privacy-conscious users.

DuckDuckGo's features, such as Search Assist and an AI Image Filter, are gaining popularity, showcasing a blend of user choice and technological advancement. As the demand for privacy-focused search options grows, DuckDuckGo is positioning itself as a viable alternative to mainstream search engines.

This trend indicates a significant shift in user preferences, suggesting that the future of search may increasingly prioritize privacy and user agency over AI-driven solutions.
