Stripe, a leading financial services platform, has launched Link, a digital wallet tailored for the AI era. This innovative wallet empowers autonomous agents to handle tasks such as shopping, making reservations, and purchasing tickets seamlessly.
During its recent annual conference, Stripe showcased Link, which enables users to connect multiple payment methods, monitor their spending, and manage recurring subscriptions. A standout feature is its integration capability with AI agents, allowing them to make purchases on behalf of users securely.
Available on the web, iOS, and Android, Link offers an array of functionalities typical of digital wallets. Users can link various payment methods, including credit cards, bank accounts, and cryptocurrency wallets, while also storing essential online checkout details like billing and shipping information.
Link also provides valuable tools for users to track their spending habits and manage subscriptions. It updates payment methods as needed and includes a 90-day protection policy for eligible purchases from select merchants.
What sets Link apart is its compatibility with autonomous AI agents, such as OpenClaw. As the interest in AI technology surges, evidenced by the high demand for devices like Apple's Mac Minis, the need for secure transaction methods for these agents becomes increasingly critical.
Link addresses these concerns by allowing users to connect their AI agents while safeguarding their payment information. Users grant their agents access through a standard OAuth authentication process. The agent can then initiate a spending request, providing context and awaiting user approval before any transaction occurs.
Currently, Link supports traditional payment methods, but Stripe has announced plans to introduce support for agentic tokens, stablecoins, and other payment types in the near future.
When a spending request is made, users receive a notification on their mobile or web device, ensuring they can review and approve the transaction before sharing any payment details with the AI agent. Future enhancements will allow users to set spending limits and determine when their agents can act autonomously.
Built on Stripe's new Issuing for agents framework, Link enables users to issue virtual cards for their agents to use with real-time authorization and spending controls, all while maintaining transaction visibility. Users can opt to provide agents with programmatic access to Link, utilizing one-time-use cards or Shared Payment Tokens backed by payment cards and banks.
Developers and businesses creating AI personal assistants can leverage Link's functionality, eliminating the need to develop their own wallet solutions from the ground up.
