In a significant development for SpaceX's burgeoning town of Starbase, Texas, city officials are taking steps to establish a municipal court. This initiative comes less than a year after the town's inception, which already boasts a volunteer fire department and is in the process of creating a police department.

During a recent city commission meeting, the city administrator proposed an ordinance aimed at setting up a municipal court that would include a part-time judge, a prosecutor, and a court clerk. Until a judge is appointed for a two-year term, the mayor will temporarily fulfill this role. The city administrator expressed hopes of having a suitable candidate ready for the next meeting.

Starbase, which is home to approximately 580 residents and located adjacent to SpaceX's South Texas rocket manufacturing and launch facility, is actively enhancing its municipal services. The establishment of a court is part of a broader strategy to ensure the community's needs are met as it continues to grow.

Alongside the fire department, Starbase has taken on responsibilities such as managing building permits and conducting fire code inspections. After a previous plan to contract the local county sheriff's department for patrol services fell through, the city opted to create its own police department, despite continuing to utilize the Cameron County Sheriff's Department for jail facilities.

The formation of the Starbase Police Department is currently underway, with the city anticipating that this process will take about six months. At the recent city commission meeting, an application was reviewed for the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, a necessary step in establishing the police force. This application highlighted the growing demand for law enforcement services, as the community has experienced an increase in calls for assistance over the past year.

In 2025 alone, Starbase recorded 420 law enforcement calls, 180 fire service requests, and 140 emergency medical service calls. Additionally, the area saw 353 documented accidents, with over 7,000 vehicles utilizing Highway 4 daily, the main route in and out of the community.

Starbase officials noted that the Cameron County Sheriff's Office has been unable to provide dedicated law enforcement coverage, raising concerns among residents about response times due to the town's remote location. The city's unique combination of advanced technology, coastal charm, and rising property values has led to heightened expectations for municipal services, particularly in public safety.

As SpaceX plans to ramp up its launch operations in the coming years, attracting more visitors to the area, Starbase is keen on ensuring the integrity of these activities within its jurisdiction. The city is committed to fostering a safe and well-managed environment for both residents and visitors alike.
