Spotify Introduces Exciting New Lyrics Features

Spotify enhances its lyrics features with offline support, a new layout, and global translation options, enriching the listening experience for users.

One of the most beloved aspects of contemporary music streaming platforms is the availability of built-in lyrics. In the past, I often found myself searching for song lyrics online, which was manageable when I was at home but quite challenging while on the move with my iPod. This might explain why I often think I know the lyrics to certain songs, only to realize my memory was off when I finally read them. Thus, integrated lyrics serve both as a practical tool and a humbling reminder.

As February begins, Spotify is enhancing its existing lyrics features with three significant updates. Announced on Wednesday, two of these improvements will benefit free users, while one is exclusive to Premium subscribers. Although Spotify may not provide the dynamic lyrics feature found in Apple Music, these enhancements are sure to be appreciated by those who enjoy following along with their favorite tracks.

Offline Lyrics Now Available on Spotify

In my view, the standout announcement is the introduction of offline lyrics support. This has been a source of frustration when using my phone without cellular connectivity. For instance, if I download albums to enjoy during a flight, I previously couldn't access the lyrics while in airplane mode. Now, the ability to download lyrics alongside songs or albums is a small yet impactful upgrade.

However, this offline feature is not available for free users; it is currently exclusive to Premium subscribers, which aligns with the fact that free users cannot download music for offline listening--only podcasts.

Lyrics Relocating Within the Spotify App

Historically, lyrics have been displayed at the bottom of the player window in the Spotify app. Users had to scroll down and tap the lyrics section to expand it fully. Spotify has determined that this user interface could be improved. Based on their testing, they found that placing the lyrics directly beneath the album art enhances user interaction. Therefore, this is where the lyrics will now be positioned.

The company refers to this as "lyrics previews," where users can see snippets of the lyrics at a time. This change will be available to both free and Premium users on iOS and Android. If you prefer not to view the lyrics, you can simply tap the three-dot menu and select "Lyrics Off."

Spotify assures users that this new placement will not affect the ability to share lyrics. You will still be able to send specific lines to friends and on social media, just from the new lyrics window.

Global Support for Lyrics Translations on Spotify

Spotify's lyrics translation feature simplifies understanding the song's meaning, especially when the lyrics are in a language you don't speak. When playing a song that differs from your device's system language, a translate button will appear in the lyrics window. By tapping it, Spotify will provide translations beneath each line, allowing you to follow along seamlessly.

Previously available in over 25 markets by the end of last year, this feature is now being rolled out globally.
