On Wednesday, Spotify unveiled significant updates to its integrated song lyrics feature, which now includes global availability of lyrics translations, the ability to view lyrics offline, and a new placement within the app.
These enhancements come after a series of modifications aimed at utilizing the lyrics feature as a means to convert free users into subscribers. This initiative began with Spotify's attempt to introduce a paywall for lyrics in 2024, which was later relaxed following user feedback.
The newly introduced offline lyrics feature, available exclusively to Premium subscribers, is expected to motivate users to upgrade their accounts.
In this revamped experience, lyrics will be prominently displayed beneath the album cover or the short, looping video accompanying the music. Spotify decided to enhance the visibility of lyrics based on user testing, which indicated that this change would boost engagement. Users can still share their favorite lyrics snippets on social media from the Now Playing View.
This lyrics preview feature will be rolled out globally to both free and paid users on the iOS and Android applications for smartphones and tablets.
Furthermore, lyrics translations, which were first introduced in 2022, are now available worldwide, expanding from the previous 25 markets. Users can access translations by tapping the translate icon on the lyrics card, with the translation defaulting to the device's language settings.
In recent years, Spotify has been gradually rolling out lyrics across its platform, overcoming licensing challenges. After much anticipation from users, the company finally introduced real-time lyrics to a global audience in 2021, following a limited launch in select markets the previous year.
